The Latest View Of The Solar System

Apr 22, 2012 By Vishesh, 9

Recently we discovered the 4 new planets: Ceres, Haumea [Hah-oo-MAY-ah], Makemake [MAH-keh-MAH-keh], and Eris. These planets are known as dwarf planets but in 6 billion years, these dwarf planets will turn into planets. Here is a tiny description about dwarf planets

What are dwarf planets?

A dwarf planet is an object orbiting the Sun that is large enough to be rounded by its own gravity but does not exert much of a gravitational pull, and is not a moon. A dwarf planet is a celestial body which is too small to be considered a real planet but too large to be called a space rock. It must revolve around the sun and it should not be a satellite of another planet.

Ceres: This planet was discovered by accident in 1801. Ceres is the fifth planet from the Sun. By this discovery, Jupiter moved to be the sixth planet. Ceres is hidden in the Asteroid Belt. In Roman mythology, Ceres was the goddess of fruit, vegetable, and agriculture. For one orbit around the Sun, it takes 4.6 Earth years. Ceres is one of the two dwarf planets without moons.

Haumea: This planet is one of the most unusual objects in the solar system. It looks like a football that was kicked from a football kicker or a chicken egg. If you cut this planet in half, it would remind you of an M&M because the outside candy coating is the ice and the chocolate found inside a rock. Haumea was a powerful Hawaiian sorceress.

Makemake: This is the second dwarf planet without any moons. Discovered around Easter 2005, it is nicknamed “Easterbunny.” Methane and nitrogen gas are detected in its atmosphere. Makemake’s orbital period is 310 Earth years. You can’t imagine how cold the twelfth planet could be. On warm days on Makemake, don’t even bother to wear summer clothes. Temperatures are -406 Fahrenheit. Makemake is named for the Easter Island God of fertility, creator of the humans, and the chief God of bird.

Eris: This planet is the most coldest and distant dwarf planet in our solar system. It’s even bigger than Pluto. Eris is ten billion miles beyond the Kuiper Belt with its moon Dysnomia. This planets color is pure gray. In Roman mythology, Eris is the goddess of discord or fighting. Legend says she always caused trouble.

I really enjoy space exploration and finding new planets, dwarf planets, blackholes, moons, eclipses, and constellations.

Ok so I don't want to go on the dwarf planet makemake. It would be way to hot. This is really cool that scientist are figuring this stuff up.Too bad we won't be alive in 6 billion years to learn about them.

It is amazing how you can see everthing from up there i wish space looked just like earth we would not know the difference

austinm3   1 year ago

I would have never guessed that there could be a planet in the Asteroid Belt that has no moon. That is something that I thought was not very possible. I don't see how you find a planet on accident they are kind of big for finding it on accident but then again it has no moon. That takes a long time just to travel around the sun 4.6 years.

That is amazing how scientists have found these planets that are even bigger than Pluto and so many of them that can be added to are solar system. When those planets soon get added to are solar system think how big it would be. Going even more than 12,000,000 miles and going far till we can't even study them.

ashwinp   1 year ago

wow i knew all the other planets, but not makemke and haumea. And most of these planets were discovered when I was living. I wonder if there are any more planets in our solar system.

mohammedk2   1 year ago

You are right, I never knew there were haumea and makemake, if there it would be cool.
