Almond Milk Or Cow's Milk?

Did you know that the biggest consumers of water in California are farms? Agriculture uses 80% of all the developed water supply in the state!

One crop stands out for consuming more water than all the showering, dish-washing, and other indoor household water used by California’s 39 million people. Almonds. It may surprise you to know that it takes about a gallon of water to grow one almond!

Almond groves soak up 10% of California’s entire water supply. It is not that almonds are bigger water guzzlers than other crops. It is that almonds are very lucrative and their demand has exploded by 80% -- especially from China. This has led to an increase in almond plantations in the state.

But a bigger culprit that consumes even more water in California is alfalfa. They are the primary crops in pasture lands that feed cattle. Did you know that harvested hay is not only used for grazing by local cattle but even exported to places like China?

No Impact On Agriculture?

I personally would choose almond milk. I am vegan and I only use almond milk. I think that California should not blame this drought on almonds, cows drink more water than almonds use to grow. And if anyone has seen the horror and death in cattle farms than drinking milk should be painful! Please don't blame almonds! Some people can't even drink milk or have any dairy products! How about not even using milk, we could just drink water!

I am vegan so I only drink almond milk. Cows use more water than almonds do, so I think that if California wants to blame something for the drought than they should blame the cows not the almonds. Please drink almond milk, it saves cows lives!! I cows lives are worth saving!!

Cows don't die by you milking them. You just squeeze their udder. It doesn't hurt the cow. But I DEFINITELY agree about animal and cow slaughter. It makes gag about it. ( I'm a vegetarian.)

The fact that this article fails to mention is that the government of California has released enough water for a city of 500,000 people for a year. This was to help 12 fish. This happened again for 6 fish. This is a major part that is missing, although I agree with everything else in this article.
