Hey, I Know You! How A Computer Does It..

So you are walking by a digital billboard and suddenly an advertisement (ad) speaks to you, enticing you to the nearest store that has the favorite toy that all your friends are talking about and one you are craving for.
A moment later, as your older sibling passes by the same billboard, an ad for the latest fashion accessory is playing. Just her thing! Eerie... Is that billboard a mind reader? If you think this is the stuff of science fiction, think again. This is the technology of the present, and is fast becoming a reality thanks to Facial Recognition.
Recently, a London bus stop has become quite a tourist attraction. Using this technology, an ad put up by the children’s charity Plan UK plays a full length ad only to women. When a man approaches the board, it simply displays a message of the charity’s website and no ad.
Biometrics

Let’s step back. Can you recall instances when you may have crossed a person on the road? A brief glance at the face is enough for you to recall that person in a flash at a different time and place. Each human face has approximately 80 nodal points. When we see a face, our brains act as a scanner and a few important characteristics get fixed in our minds and is stored away subconsciously. The brain reconstructs the face again by bringing back the stored data. Our amazing brain has the capacity to replay many of these images from the past and come up with near perfect matches.
What exactly are these nodal points or characteristics? It is the distance between the eyes, width of the nose, depth of the eye sockets, shape of the cheekbones, length of the jaw line, etc. Nature just isn't that precise. Within a basic pattern predetermined by our genes, physical parts in each of us form in slightly different ways from every other person who has ever lived. The combinations are simply numerous making it nearly impossible to find duplicates.
Now imagine automating it. The potential becomes enormous. Very swiftly, from just an image, nodal points can be quickly scanned and measured by a computer. Sophisticated software generates numerical codes or faceprints from this data and quickly matches them against large databases.
Opportunities and Drawback
Facial recognition works similar to fingerprinting, DNA matching, iris matching and palm printing. But unlike them, facial recognition has far more immense possibilities. Think about it. Photos do not need a person to touch a surface. Besides being 'contact-less', from a mere photo or digital image, sophisticated technology can actually classify people by their age, gender and ethnicity based just on facial characteristics. Think of the amazing possibilities in security, marketing and other areas.
But no technology is without its drawback. Many fear that a 'contact-less' technology like facial recognition is very intrusive, violates privacy and can be misused. Your picture can be taken without your consent! With security cameras everywhere post 9/11, the threat of profiling people using this technology is very real.
Drawbacks apart, the sheer potential of the technology is spurring many innovative uses. Facebook for one is using the technology to automatically tag uploaded photos on their server. A lot of research and development is happening in this area. Brace yourself for some exciting times.
Critical Thinking: What are some of the ways you think facial recognition technology will evolve in future? Do you think it is a threat or an asset to us?

scary
Thats scary they know what we do
simply WOW :)
This Is Good Cause People Cant Steal
cool
strange
This is cool!
wow this was weird!
It's kind of creepy that technology can find out all this stuff about you. Isn't it an invasion of privacy?
Yes but people have to make money
I cant beleive an advertisement can be that cool.
That's kind of weird. It's like your on the street and all of a sudden your on a ad.I don't think that it would be cool if they recognized you.Well maybe but still.Plus I am kind of glad nobody looks like me in this world.
Wierd but cool. It's like Hello I am an ad on the street, You are feeling sad and love pasta! Your name is Bobby Pieloe. It's like a papparazzi for every one no privacy on the streets!
i would not want to be recognized wherever i go
Amazing!
cool
Every device has a plus point and a minus point. For instance , this is a vey complex and sophisticated device and can be used for various purposes. But , it is a device which is concerned about the security of a person and not about interfering in one's private life.
It's cool how a computer works
that is pretty cool!!!!!!
i think this is sorta creepy.. cuz then they can always have your face with you in the camera
i think it is really cool how they can recognize your face. it can be used to catch thieves and terrorists so its also really useful.
I agree with diamond! It is so true.
I tried to watch the video but it said: The user who uploaded this video, blocked it on your country. I am from Spain if anyone could help me.
The same thing happened to me
That is amazing and interesting!
COOL!
I am 50
wow!!! crazy stuff!!!
Yeah..really crazy!
OK, that's kind of cool. I can't believe that it knows from your face what you would want to see!
Wow That Was... AMAZING!!(;
Isn't that a little bit of invasion of privacy with facial recognition software?
Omg... very creepy!
It is so creepy..but so amazing!
It might be used to recognize criminals or terrorists, but those are unlikely situations.
How does it detect age? Does it analyze wrinkles or something along those lines?
I don't like this. It could be cool but criminals could use it to capture all of your private information.
Facial recognition could help security.
Weird. I don't know whether or not this is cool or just taking technology too far. Sometimes technology makes it so that we don't have to think. I mean, soon we won't even have to move from our chairs. It will be like in the movie Wall-E where everyone just sits and stares at the computer all day. Now, that's bad.
this is so wierd! odd!
I think that it is a threat to this facial recognition technology. A lot of private information can be given away and people's pictures can be taken without their permission. There are quite some negatives but at the same time positives. They can use it to find terrorists or criminals easily.
I think that they should only use it in certain places like police stations so that it isn't misused
Wow!!!! That's high-tech!
thats what she said hahah
yah, it is... Imagine what life is going to be like in 10 years!
Cool, but at the same time its sorta freaky.
I agree!!
Wow
OMG that is so cool. Look how far our technology has come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think its great what she found out.How smart is she?
Ha, smarter than me, that's all I know!
This is very cool. i can't believe that now days technology can scan a person's face and be able to tell the depth of their eye socket bones. This could be a bad thing. Would you like someone taking pictures of you when you're not looking or without your consent?
