Since our previous complete-the-story was not as great a hit as we had hoped, here is another one. Perhaps this one will inspire our young writers :-)

Complete the story under 500 words. Think of creative ways to take the story forward. The best 3 will be declared winners.

Kim crouched down and said, "Hi, little guy! What is your name?" She saw no tag, so she walked inside her house, saying to the pup, "Stay!" The puppy looked like he nodded his head. Kim yelled, "Mom! There is a dog outside without a collar or a tag!" Her mom's face poked out the kitchen window. She took one look at the pup, then at the hopeful look on Kim's face, and vigorously shook her head, understanding what she wanted. "But mom!" Kim whined. "Absolutely not. You're older sister is allergic. Now get to school. You're going to be late." Kim's eyes drooped and she turned to the door. "Shoot," she muttered to herself. Then, a light bulb went on in her head. Kim grinned sneakily and carefully picked the dog up. She zipped open her backpack and slipped the dog inside, cautious to leave it halfway open so that the dog wouldn't suffocate. She walked down the street to the school and, instead of going inside, she walked around the corner and into the local kennel. She told the lady at the desk, " Can you take care of this pup for a week?" The lady nodded and said, " That will be $30." Kim's eyes popped out of her head. $30! She had that much in her bank account! She sighed and gave the lady her credit card, not wanting to give away her money. Then, she turned and left the kennel. She would tell her friend Cassidy to go and pick up the dog, then drop it off at her house. She could pretend that the dog had found her itself. Then she would be allowed to keep it!
After school, Kim was walking home from school and had just walked into her driveway when she saw a familiar dog scratching at her door. It had returned! She hadn't even asked Cassidy yet. The dog had found it's own way! And as she looked up, she saw her mother standing in the doorway, a smile on her face. Her sister Janet was next to her, a happy look on her face. "You're sister has outgrown her allergy! We went to the doctor today. You can have this dog!" Her mom said. Kim ran to the pup and whispered, "I name you Boomerang!" They were together forever.

Kim had no idea where the dog came from. One morning, when she opened the door, there it was whimpering on the porch. Kim checked if there was a collar. Seeing none, she picked up the dog up and dashed to the kitchen where her mother was cooking. ''May we keep the dog?'' Kim panted. ''I always wanted one''. Her mom turned her head around to find herself staring at a small terrier pup. It seemed like an hour when finally her mother agreed to keep the dog. Kim raced up to her room with the dog trailing behind. Kim sat on the edge of her bed and thought hard for a good name for the chocolate brown terrier, now curled up on on her pillow sleeping. Kim thought about the name till evening, then was distracted by her mother's callings for supper. While she was eating steak, Kim sneaked some of it into her napkin for the terrier. After dinner, Kim watched the dog gobble the steak down.

The next morning, she went out in the neighborhood looking for lost dog posters. Since she found none, she went back home and contacted the only pet store in town if they had sold a chocolate brown terrier. There was none. So Kim picked up the dog. She stared into its eyes and whispered, “Now you’re mine.”

Kim had no idea where the puppy had come from. One morning, when she opened the door, there it was. Kim bent down, and the scrawny golden retriever immediately backed away. Kim whispered in a soft tone to the dog. “It’s all right, I won't hurt you." The dog whined and curled up. Being such a small dog, Kim easily picked it up, and brought it into the barn behind her grandparents' house. She found an old box, which she filled with hay and old scraps of rags. The dog nestled comfortably. Kim stood up and looked at the old box with the sleeping dog. She beamed as she thought of a name for the puppy. Then she turned and went to her house.
The next morning, she returned with great excitement to the barn. There she coaxed the cow out of the barn and stated milking her. The puppy had awoken and was tumbling around. Kim laughed and shot a squirt of milk over to the puppy’s open mouth. The puppy, tasting it, tumbled back in surprise, and then trotted over to the bucket. “Hello, sweet puppy,” she crooned as she picked it up and ruffled its reddish copper fur. Kim knew now it was a she puppy. “What’s your name? Do you like Tipsy?” The puppy barked, and a whine followed it. “Oh well.” Kim thought. “I’ll think of one soon.”
The puppy was big now, and Kim guessed it was about three years old. Kim still could not think of any name, but the puppy was content with “Puppy” or “Pup.” Kim delighted in the pup’s antics and would lovingly caress her. Grandmother and Grandfather had allowed the dog to stay, that Pup might come in handy with the sheep one day.
A year later, the dog had still no name- until one night. Pup, who was sleeping by her bedside suddenly stood up, and howled. Kim rubbed her eyes and saw her dog’s outline shimmering against the silvery moon. Something was wrong. Kim bolted up right and ran to the window. She immediately shut it, coughing. “Pup!” she coughed, “There’s a fire in the oats!” Kim stampeded down the hallway with Pup at her heels to her grandparents’ room and shook them awake. “There’s a fire in the crop! Wake up! WAKE UP!” Pup howled. That woke her grandparents up. “Get water!” Grandfather ordered. The two women rushed downstairs. Kim grabbed the garden hose and Grandmother filled pitcher after pitcher, while Grandfather tried to beat the fire out. The smoke was getting in his lungs. Suddenly he fell unconscious. “Grandfather, oh no!” Kim panicked. She dropped the hose and ran towards him. The golden red fur was faster. She bolted to the unconscious mam and pulled him out. By then firemen and the ambulance was here, and Kim knew Grandfather would be fine. But Pup had hurt herself, and Kim attended her dog herself. It wasn’t a bad burn, and Pup would heal quickly. Kim sobbed into the dog’s fur, with relief and anxiety. The dog finally had a name- Firefighter.

... staring up at her. It's large, pleading eyes looked into hers. She could see it's ribs sticking out of its belly, and it's tail was ever so slightly wagging. Kim couldn't stand to see any creature like this! Looking around, to make sure no one was present for what she was about to do, she stepped aside and ushered the dog past her, into the house.

As soon as the puppy stepped foot on the carpet, Kim realized that it had black, muddy paws. "Mom is not going to be happy to have black paw prints all over her brand new white rug!" She thought to herself. She advanced towards the dog, to grab him. However, as soon as the little dog saw her outstretched hands reaching for him, he bolted up the stairs. "No!" Kim cried, "Not in my room!" She quickly followed the pup.

At the top of the stairs, Kim didn't see the brown little fuzzball in sight. "Where are you?" She called, looking through the open doorways. There were no muddy prints in sight, nothing to clue her in as to where the puppy might be. Suddenly, she heard a splash, and excited barking. It was a whimpering cry. It sounded like it was coming from the bathroom. Kim quickly and quietly approached the closed door. "How could he have gotten in and closed the door?" She thought. Kim opened the door a crack and peeked in.

At the tub, sat her mother, holding the dog... scrubbing him clean. "Mom!" Kim cried, bursting through the door, "What are you doing?" "Oh! Kim!" Her mother paused, wiping her brow. "You frightened me!" "Mom, what are you doing?" "Me? Why I'm washing this dog. What else do you think I'm doing?" Kim stared at her mother. "I got that part, but WHY are you washing him?" "I've opened a dog washing business here in our bathroom! I was in the middle of giving little Rover a bath here when he escaped and ran downstairs." Again, Kim just stared at her. She had known that her old lady was crazy, but not to this extent. Then, slowly, she just shook her head, and walked back downstairs.

Kim had no idea where the puppy had come from. One morning, when she opened the door, there it was. She stared at it hesitantly for a second, and then grinned widely.
It was a small black puppy, with huge sad eyes and a tiny wagging tail.
"Where did you come from, little guy? Are you lost?" Kim looked around for anyone who this puppy could belong to, but there was no one around. The streets were completely deserted. That's strange, Kim thought to herself. The streets were usually filled with happy playing children and people out walking their dogs. But the sidewalks were empty. There was no sound, except for the strong wind dragging a lone trashcan across the road. Strong wind? There wasn't any wind this morning. Kim looked up at the sky, at the dark grey storm clouds gathering overhead.
"Uh, oh. Looks like there's going to be a storm. You had better come inside with me until it's over. Then we can find your owner." Kim picked up the squirming puppy and looked at its collar. "Dash? That's a nice name. Come inside."
She carried Dash inside and sat down on the couch with him. That's when it started to rain. Dash started squirming and running all around the room. He put his paws up on Kim's lap and stared at her imploringly. Then he barked loudly.
It seems like he's trying to tell me something, Kim thought. The rain picked up to a steady drumroll on the roof. This is the worst storm we've had in some time, Kim thought, as a lightning bolt streaked across the sky. Kim was just starting to worry when she heard a rapid knocking at the door. She opened it up quickly, now starting to get scared.
A rain soaked woman in an old dirty dress was standing at her door, tears streaming down her face. Kim, concerned, said, "Ma'am, it's pouring outside! Please come in!" She took the woman's arm and started to lead her inside, but the woman pulled away, and shrieked over the noise of the wind,
"Please come with me! I know you are new to this neighborhood, and you are not familiar with the weather here. We get storms like this often, and by now every one of us now knows to check if we are being evacuated. I didn't know if you knew, so I was concerned about you. That's why I sent my dog in to tell you. He is far faster than me. Now please come before this storm gets any worse! The city has been evacuated!"
Kim stood there, stunned. So that's what Dash was trying to tell me. She grabbed the puppy and ran outside into the rain, following the woman who had probably just saved her life.

sitting on her doorstep. Kim had know idea what to do or where this puppy came from! She stepped outside and searched for a near by owner. The puppy ran inside and jumped on the couch!
"Get off the couch!"
The puppy jumped off but ran into the kitchen. Kim's heart just melted as the puppy begged for food. Kim grabbed a piece of chicken off of her left over dinner plate and dropped it on the floor. the puppy devorured it and wanted more. Kim shrugged with a sad look on her eye.
Kim's mother came into the kitchen, angry.
"Ugh! How could Beth do such a thing!" Beth was her mom's work partner. "She took my work off my desk and claimed it as her own... What is that dog doing in my house!?"
"Ummm, Well... I found her on the the doorstep and umm, can we keep her? I'll do whatever it takes to keep her, please!"
"Ok. Why not?"
THE END

oops. I pressed the wrong key. I have a tendency to do that. :P i'll continue the story.

all of a sudden, the dog's fur seemed to distort and wrinkle. the fur fell away to reveal a slimy green creature. Kim froze in shock. the thing flicked its hand and Kim felt herself being lifted. with horror, she was carried out of her home and toward the lake, the green creature following.
once in the lake, Kim found she could breathe, but she wondered how. the green, slimy thing guided her straight into a cave carved into the bank of the lake. there was no water in the opening. once in the cave, she was gently set down. the creature slithered ahead of her and beckoned with a finger for her to follow. she did so willingly.
deeper in the cave, she heard a bizarre murmuring. around the corner, Kim saw a whole gathering of the green things. a hush fell over the room when she entered behind the first creature. it said, "i have brought one."
Kim wondered what it meant, but not for long. and older looking green thing walked up to her and held up a cell phone. it asked her in a squeaky voice, "Human, do you know what this is?"
Indignant, she answered haughtily, "Of course i very well know what it is. it's a cell phone."
"what does it do?" all the creatures were silent with excitement.
"Well, you can call people on it. so you can hear their voices."
the creatures oohed and aahed. "thank you, Human." the ancient creature replied. he turned to the thing that had brought her into their lair. "Take her back to her house, and do what we usually do to humans once they have seen us."
fearful, Kim once again followed the green thing back to her home. when she was on her doorstep, it spoke to her. "Look at me." was all it said.
she turned, and instantly it flicked its wrist. she felt like she had been knocked out. when she opened her eyes, she remember nothing of those events. she lived out the rest of her life happily oblivious to green slimy creatures living under the lake.

"Aaaaawwwwwww!" she cried. she picked him up and brought him inside her house, where she lived alone.
she set the miniature canine in front of the electric fireplace to warm up. then she sat down in her La-Z-Boy and watched the pup tenderly.

... It was a cute little golden retriever. Kim, who's heart melted at the sight of her asked her mom if she could keep her. "I'll wash the dishes and clean my room every day if I can keep her. pleease!" her mom assented. Kim instantly decided to name her Jenny. soon, Kim began setting up a temporary bed for her. a few days later, she and her mom went shopping for dog toys. when they got home, Kim snuggled with Jenny to write in her journal. she thought "i wish i knew where daddy is. if he could be here for my birthday, it would be so awesome." Kim's father was somewhere in Afghanistan, completing a secret mission. suddenly, Kim spotted a tiny gadget attached to Jenny. Kim jumped. she knew her father, who was a secret agent, had enemies. but who would know where his family was? Kim quickly showed her mom, who called the police. a guard was set around the house, and later that week, assassins were caught sneaking around the house. Kim's daddy returned safely, and was rewarded for capturing a dangerous terrorist leader.

whimpering pathetically on the porch. Its tail wagged slowly, as if nervously asking for acceptance. It looked as though it had recently gotten into a fight with another dog.

Kim bent down to see if there was a name or an address on him, but there was not. "Hmm," she said. "How are you?" She pet him on the head. "You look like you're not doing so well."

The puppy whimpered again, and Kim backed into the house, letting the pup enter. She wasn't sure if her mother and father would make her get rid of the puppy, but she couldn't just reject him.

The dog, which Kim mentally named "Windy" after his messed-up fur, followed Kim happily, but warily, into Kim's kitchen. "Mom?" Kim asked.

"Yes, dear?"

"I found this dog on the doorstep. . . ." Windy walked up to Kim's mother. He was quite friendly for a stray dog. "Um, can we keep him?"

"You know how expensive dogs are, baby," her mother said. "You're not ready." She stared into the dog's strangely loving eyes, and Kim could see she was struggling not to say "yes".

"I'll get a job," Kim said hurriedly. "I'll pay for food. I'll clean up everyday. I promise. I swear by my life, Zeus as my witness!"

It took a long time to convince Kim's mother - and a significantly shorter time to convince her father - and the puppy, officially named Windy, joined the family.

Everyday, Kim and Windy went for a walk. She cleaned up after him and they loved each other. He slept with Kim every night and woke her up with kisses every morning.

Several years later, Kim got a call from school. Her mother told her to come home, and her principal allowed her. She ran home, her heart pounding, to be greeted by an unusually unenergetic dog named Windy. She scooped him up and set him on her lap.

"What's wrong?" Kim asked. The dog's breathing was shallow. He licked Kim's face, and Kim smiled and pet him, until his breathing slowed . . . and slowed . . . and it stopped.

He had waited for Kim to come home, so he could say his final, grateful goodbye.
