You might have wondered as we did - is there a safe, well-lit web site for children where they can learn about current events around the world without the bias, sensationalism and often inappropriate content in mainstream media? When our quest did not yield anything, we decided to start one.

Youngzine is a one-of-a-kind Web site where children can learn about current news and events shaping their world -- in a simple, engaging and interactive manner. Our goal is to help parents and educators create a vibrant community of globally aware young citizens in an increasingly connected world. Along with news stories written specifically with our young audience in mind, Youngzine strives to inform using fun trivia, compelling visuals and videos.

Youngzine is more than a passive website; it is a community of children, parents and teachers who recognize the importance of living in this highly interconnected age where our actions have far reaching impact. Children are encouraged to express their views, submit articles, book reviews or travelogues, and all content is moderated by the editorial team.

Youngzine is capturing the hearts of parents, teachers and children.
Here's what some of them have to say.

Our Passionate Team

Deepa Gopal, Founder & CEO

Following a calling to make a difference, Deepa left her 17 year career in engineering to start Youngzine. She was motivated by her 11 year old son’s desire to know about current events around the world and the lack of a clean, child friendly site that met his needs. Deepa believes that our children are curious, open-minded and are living in an interconnected age where building global awareness is important to their future. Deepa is based in San Jose, CA and in her spare time, volunteers at AchieveKids, a wonderful bay area non-profit that is making a difference for disadvantaged children.

Anita Ramachandran, Co-Founder

Anita, the mother of a curious 10 year old, has made a career in the high octane world of portfolio management - Venture Capital and Hedge funds for over 18 years. She strongly believes that children need to stay informed about the world they live in, and be able to transcend classroom learning to see its practical applicability, so that they can evolve as better thinkers and decision makers. To her, Youngzine is that perfect medium which can make this transition happen. Financial learning is seldom offered to kids in a structured learning environment. Anita believes that this critical subject can be taught in a subtle non threatening way by exploring relevant issues as they happen in the world around us.

Arati Rao, Contributor

A confirmed news junkie, Arati Rao has always dreamt of contributing to a newspaper for young minds. As mom to a curious 9 year-old, she strongly believes in the importance of awareness in youngsters of the changing world around them. Youngzine presented a perfect opportunity to do just that. Besides writing for Youngzine, Arati can be found analyzing consumer behavior for companies or trampling in rainforests on photography expeditions. She also writes on social/environmental conservation issues and travelogues for various magazines. Based in Bangalore, she loves tennis, calligraphy and graphic design.

Sarah Charley, Contributor

Sarah Charley has a soft spot in her heart for any science that can answer two simple questions: what is it and how does it work? Instead of pursuing the scientific research route, Sarah decided to follow her passion for writing and explore the amazing field of science communication. Now she is the star in a major motion picture entitled, “Safety First: Chemistry Laboratory Safety.” Okay, so it’s not that major, but the critics still called it a “must see” for any student in Chemistry 101. After blogging for NOVA, writing for a high energy a physics lab, and working for an outdoor education and recreation company, she is now looking forward to sharing her sense of wonder with the readers of Youngzine.

Sri Subramaniam, Tech Contributor

Sri is a Silicon Valley geek who believes in making positive changes in the world through technology. When his wife Deepa started Youngzine, he jumped on the opportunity to help her with setting up the web site in his spare time. Sri believes that our kids are much smarter and much more capable of absorbing more of the world around them than we think, and is passionate about stretching their boundaries.
